Become a school social worker
Make your MSW count in every classroom. The Iowa School Social Work Endorsement is a state-recognized credential that allows licensed social workers to serve within Iowa's public and private K–12 school systems. It is earned alongside your Master of Social Work degree, not in place of it.
As a school social worker, you become the connective link between students, families, educators, and community resources. You provide the mental health support, behavioral intervention, and crisis response that allow children to learn and thrive.
Built for MSW students who want to help students thrive in school settings
The endorsement is designed to fit within your MSW program — whether you are in your first year, an advanced standing student, or already hold your degree.
Regular standing MSW students
Designate the endorsement as a program of study by Jan. 30 of your final year.
Advanced standing MSW students
Admitted to the one-year program. Contact ssw-dept@uiowa.edu immediately upon admission — the timeline is tighter.

Align your goals and courses with your MSW
You maintain your MSW specialization—clinical or leadership—while adding the required electives and practicum that fulfill endorsement requirements.
- MSW coursework: Complete your existing MSW requirements in clinical or leadership specialization. The endorsement builds on this, not around it.
- Required electives: Two required electives plus one additional elective is chosen from an approved list:
- SSW:6233 School Social Work Practice ( 3 s.h.) - Required
- EDTL:4900 Foundations of Special Education (3 s.h.) - Required
- 3 s.h. course chosen from approved list in the Endorsement course guide (pdf)
- School-based practicum: SSW:7760 — Practicum in School Social Work, completed across your final two semesters in a supervised K–12 school or Area Education Agency (AEA) setting, providing hands-on experience supporting students and school communities.

Everything you need to know
Get answers to these common questions from prospective and current MSW students:
What is the Iowa School Social Work Endorsement, and how is it different from my MSW?
Your MSW is your degree. The Iowa School Social Work Endorsement is a state credential issued by the Iowa Department of Education. The endorsement authorizes you to practice social work specifically within Iowa's K–12 school system. Most school social work positions require both. The endorsement is earned within your MSW program by completing required electives and a school-based practicum.
How do I add the endorsement to my program of study?
If you are currently enrolled in the MSW program, notify your academic advisor of your interest and email ssw-dept@uiowa.edu for next steps. If you are not yet enrolled in the MSW program, reach out to the same address to discuss admission and endorsement options together.
What is the deadline to declare the endorsement?
Students must officially designate the Iowa School Social Work Endorsement as an additional program of study by Jan. 30 before their final year of the MSW program. For advanced standing (one-year) students, please notify ssw-dept@uiowa.edu immediately upon admission.
Can both Advanced Standing and Regular Standing students earn this endorsement?
Yes. Students in both programs are eligible for the Iowa School Social Work Endorsement as long as it has been officially added as a program of study by the Jan. 30 deadline before your final year.
Will I have to give up my MSW specialization?
No. You will continue focusing on your chosen specialization—clinical or leadership—while completing the required electives and school-based practicum for the endorsement. The programs are designed to work together, not compete.
What practicum experience is required?
MSW students pursuing the endorsement complete Practicum in School Social Work (SSW:7760) during their specialized practicum across their final two semesters. This supervised, school-based placement does not require prior school employment and may take place in a K–12 school or Area Education Agency (AEA) setting.
How long does the endorsement take to complete?
With thoughtful planning, MSW students can complete all endorsement requirements within their existing academic program timeline. It does not typically require additional semesters when declared on time.
What can I do with the Iowa School Social Work Endorsement?
The Iowa School Social Work Endorsement opens pathways to school social work careers across Iowa. Graduates may work in public and private K–12 school districts, Area Education Agencies (AEAs), and other educational settings supporting student well-being and academic success. Visit the Iowa School Social Workers’ Association webpage for an overview of school social work services, licensure in Iowa, CEU and licensure renewal, and job opportunities.
I already have my MSW. Can I still earn the endorsement?
If you hold an MSW degree and have worked as a social worker in a public or private school setting, there may be a pathway available to you. Contact ssw-dept@uiowa.edu to schedule a time to discuss your individual situation.
