Practicum education is the signature pedagogy of social work and the foundation of competency-based professional preparation.
Through practicum education, students integrate classroom learning with supervised, hands-on practice in community settings where they apply social work knowledge, values, skills, and ethical decision-making with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
The University of Iowa School of Social Work partners with agencies across Iowa and neighboring states to provide high-quality practicum experiences that prepare students for competent, ethical, and responsive professional practice. Under the guidance of experienced practicum instructor supervisors, students develop and demonstrate the competencies outlined in the Council on Social Work Education's 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) while serving diverse populations and communities.
Whether you are a current student, prospective student, practicum supervisor, or agency interested in partnering with us, you'll find information throughout this site about practicum requirements, resources, and opportunities.
