Frederick Newell, originally from Chicago, Illinois, made his way to Iowa City, where he graduated with a B.A. in Social Work from the University of Iowa in 2012. Shortly after, Newell began working to establish a non-profit organization focused on the youth of Iowa City.

Newell’s goal was to create a space for Black and Brown children, particularly those from low-income and single-parent households, to access role models and support. As a father himself, Newell also wanted to create an environment that supported parents in their own personal growth. Over the next twelve years, his organization, Dream City, would not only expand in size but also leave a lasting impact on the community.

This is why Newell has been named one of the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s “People to Watch” in 2025. In December of last year, the Iowa City-based newspaper published an article highlighting Newell’s journey, from his roots in Chicago to his plans for the future of Dream City. Even as an undergraduate, it was clear Newell was destined for great things, and he received encouragement from faculty, including Sara Sanders, a faculty member in the School of Social Work and current Dean of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, to continue his education.

The article not only highlights the trajectory of Dream City, including significant achievements such as being awarded $3 million by the City of Iowa City to purchase their building, but also the lasting impacts Newell has had on people's lives.

The story features testimonials from two former Iowa City youth, Davonte Foster and Shevonna Norris, who became involved with the program during their teen years. Both shared how Dream City became much more than just a space for them, providing invaluable resources, support, and mentorship from the organization and Newell himself.

Newell shares in the story his aspirations for the future, including his goal to establish Dream City as a regional hub to better serve those in the greater Iowa City area who need it most. The recognition for Newell’s work has been twenty years in the making, and he shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
