To support the continued growth of the School of Social Work and the success of its students, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is investing in an expanded practicum education structure for the Social Work program—strengthening the experiential learning opportunities that are central to preparing the next generation of social workers.

Practicum education is widely recognized as the signature pedagogy of social work, where students apply classroom learning in real-world settings, serving individuals, families, and communities across Iowa. In recent years, enrollment growth–particularly with our BASW and Online programs–has increased demand for practicum placements and coordination across Iowa and neighboring states.

Beginning in April, the school will implement an expanded model that includes:

  • Establishing an independent Director of Practicum Education role to provide strategic leadership and oversight.
  • Appointing Clinical Assistant Professor Peggy Trosper as the inaugural Director of Practicum Education.
  • Aligning faculty practicum administrators with each learning center (Iowa City, Des Moines, Sioux City, and Online) to strengthen regional support and agency partnerships.

The new structure reflects models used by peer institutions with large programs and is designed to enhance student support, strengthen agency relationships, and position the school for continued success in its upcoming accreditation review.

At a time when the university and college are making difficult decisions in some areas, this investment underscores the strength and momentum of Social Work at Iowa. Student interest in social work remains strong, and workforce demand for MSW-credentialed professionals continues nationally and across Iowa–including in rural communities where access to behavioral health and social services is critical.

“Our graduates serve communities across the state every day,” said Miriam Landsman, Associate Professor and Director of the School of Social Work. “This investment ensures we can continue preparing highly skilled, compassionate professionals who meet the evolving needs of Iowa and beyond.”

As Social Work Month celebrates the profession’s impact and commitment to social justice, the Iowa’s expanded practicum education model reflects that same commitment–strengthening the bridge between classroom learning and community practice for years to come.
