Melanie Reed, an Iowa MSW graduate and social worker, is returning to the University of Iowa as the new program specialist for the School of Social Work program in Des Moines.

Before her current role, she worked predominantly for public schools in the state of Iowa as a student support specialist for K-12. She then transitioned into being a medical social worker and then a strategy specialist focusing on mental health and suicide prevention at Iowa State University. Reed recalls similar passions she felt in her different roles, bridging gaps between families and patients, and the resources they needed.

Reed joined our staff early this year, and she hopes to support her students as much as possible. Having knowledge and experience from her career, she knows the importance of the fine details in social work cases, ranging from legal policies to emotional support resources.

Reed also graduated from the MSW program at the University of Iowa and is looking forward to encouraging and learning from graduate students who are experiencing the same journey.

“I’m excited to help people flourish who want to help other people,” Reed said.
