UI PhD Grad McKinley Awarded $2.7M Grant to Reduce Substance Abuse and Violence among Native American Families

Dr. Catherine McKinley earned her MSW and PhD degrees here in the UI School of Social Work. Now a professor at Tulane University School of Social Work, she's been awarded a $2.7 million research grant to study effective, sustainable, culturally relevant and family-centered interventions for substance abuse and violence among Native American families.

COVID-19 Resource List from the National Nursing Home Social Work Network

The coronavirus pandemic is a nightmare for nursing homes, their staffs, residents, and their families. The situation is likely similar for Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) and other residential care for older adults. In response, the National Nursing Home Social Work Network (a national group of social work researchers and advocates dedicated to nursing home social work) has gathered a list of resources for nursing home social workers, now available and being updated in an ongoing fashion on the group's website.

Caregivers’ Culture of Care: Research published in Journal of the American Geriatrics Society by Prof. May Guo

Chinese Americans are the fastest growing minority group in the United States. Their cultural belief of filial obligation–the sense of responsibility to respect and care for aging parents–is the most predominant cultural value relating to their caregiving experience. In a recent study published in the prestigious Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, we examined the influence of having a strong sense of filial obligation on Chinese-American caregivers’ caregiving burdens and how adapting to Western culture affects their experience.

School of Social Work's Aging and Longevity Studies program earns AGHE Program of Merit designation

The University of Iowa’s Aging and Longevity Studies Program’s (ALSP) certificate program, housed in the School of Social Work, has earned the Program of Merit designation from the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), a national membership organization of colleges and universities that offers education, training, and research programs in the field of aging.
